Cold front forecast to return to northern Vietnam

A new cold front reached northern Vietnam this morning, October 30, bringing rain and cooler temperatures of around 17 degrees Celsius.

The National Centre for Hydrometeorological Forecasting reported that the cold air mass moving south from China will first hit the northeast before spreading to the northwest, north-central, and central coastal regions.

From October 30 to November 1, scattered rain will fall across the northeast, while nighttime temperatures in the north and north-central regions will drop to 19-22 degrees Celsius, and below 17 degrees Celsius in mountainous areas.

Strong northeasterly winds of force 5-6, gusting 7-8, will blow over the Gulf of Tonkin, producing waves up to 2.5 metres high.

Meanwhile, central Vietnam continues to experience severe rainfall, with totals reaching 200-450 mm in Ha Tinh, Quang Tri, and Quang Ngai; 450-900 mm in Hue; and 300-600 mm in Danang. At Bach Ma Station, rainfall reached 1,739.6 mm in 24 hours, the highest single-day total ever recorded in Vietnam.

The prolonged downpour has caused widespread flooding, landslides, and serious disruption to daily life. Heavy rain continues today across Hue, Danang, and eastern Quang Ngai, with several areas recording more than 150 mm.

From tonight until October 31, meteorologists expect 30-60 mm of rain in Quang Ngai and 100-250 mm from southern Quang Tri to Danang, with localised totals exceeding 500 mm.

They warn that flash floods, landslides, urban inundation, and damage to crops, homes, and infrastructure remain high risks in vulnerable areas.
