According to the Institute of Earth Sciences, the quake occurred at about 8.28 pm on March 31 at a depth of around 16.2 kilometres, approximately five kilometres from Cao Loc Commune.
Residents reported brief shaking lasting a few seconds. One resident said her family initially mistook the tremor for a passing truck before learning it was an earthquake.
Local authorities confirmed mild tremors were felt but reported no damage or casualties.
The institute’s Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Centre assessed the event as posing no disaster risk, classified at level 0, and said it is continuing to monitor the situation.
The most recent prior quake in the area was a 2.9-magnitude event in Tan Tien Commune in Lang Son Province on January 13.
