The southern coastal province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau has become well-known for its foreign language students thanks to its policies.
For many years, Ba Ria-Vung Tau has always been in the top five localities with the highest scores for foreign languages in high school graduation exams. In the 2022 exams, the province ranked third, equal to its 2021 score.
Nguyen Ngoc Trung, head of the Quality Management Unit under the provincial Department of Education and Training said they had many ways to encourage local students to study foreign languages with the majority learning English.
"Since 2013, we have given scholarships and rewards for students who obtain IELTS, TOEFL and other certificates in English," he said. "Those who score IELTS 5.0 or TOEFL 61 or higher will receive a reward of between VND 5-8 million. Those who study other foreign languages like French, Japanese, Russian, German, and Chinese are also given the same encouragement. The fund for scholarships has increased over the years."
Vietnamese universities use international foreign language certificates such as IELTS or TOEFL as criteria for admission, according to the Director of the University Education Department under the Ministry of Education and Training.
