APF holds conference on climate change in Hanoi

The conference on environment, climate change and role of legislative bodies in policy making was held in Hanoi.

The conference on environment, climate change and role of legislative bodies in policy making was held on December 15 in Hanoi by Vietnam’s National Assembly (NA), the Francophone Parliament Alliance (APF) and the International Organization of the Francophonie (OIF).

The conference on environment, climate change and role of legislative bodies in policy making is held by Vietnam’s National Assembly, the Francophone Parliament Alliance and the International Organization of the Francophonie, Hanoi, December 15, 2010

The aim of the conference is to provide environment information and help law-makers and specialists to share experience of sustainable development and dealing with climate change.

The participants focused on assessing impacts of projects and policies on environment, the convention on biodiversity and the Carthagena Protocol on the environment and socio-economic fields, the role of parliamentarians and the negotiation of multilateral environment agreements, the convention on climate change and the Kyoto Protocol, and the role of the NA in sustainable development and coping with climate change in Vietnam.

At the conference, the Vietnamese NA was recommended to issue a resolution on coping with climate change and mobilize sources for the work, promptly issue laws on disaster prevention and control, and increase budgets for carrying out solutions to cope with climate change.

It is necessary to assist poor people and speed up hunger eradication and poverty reduction programs in regions badly hit by climate change in Vietnam.
