An additional 16,278 Covid-19 infections were confirmed in Vietnam on Friday and Hanoi continued to record the highest number with over 2,700 cases, according to the Ministry of Health.
According to the ministry's report, 16,254 of the new patients are locally-transmitted cases confirmed in 59 out of 63 localities in the country with five localities seeing the highest numbers including Hanoi (2,723), Hai Phong (795), Khanh Hoa (790), Binh Phuoc (716), and Vinh Long (699). There were 24 imported cases confirmed the same day.
The new infections showed a decrease of 163 cases compared to yesterday's figure. There were 11,423 infections found in the community.
As of Friday evening, 1,853,904 infections had been reported since the new outbreak occurred in the country in late April. Some localities that have recorded the highest number of patients include HCM City (506,902), Binh Duong (291,270), Dong Nai (98,545), Tay Ninh (81,135), and Hanoi (62,174). Vietnam has so far confirmed 30 Omicron-infected cases.
With these new infection cases, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to 1,859,841. The country now stands 28th among 224 countries and territories worldwide in the number of infections.
On January 7, an additional 14,633 more patients recovered from the disease, raising the number of recoveries in the country to 1,479,048.
On Friday evening, a further 233 deaths related to Covid-19 were announced, bringing the total number of fatalities in Vietnam to 33,877. The high fatalities were reported in some localities including HCM City (20), Dong Nai (23), Long An (16), Tien Giang (14), Vinh Long (14), and Binh Duong (12).
Vietnam on January 6 administered 804,906 doses of Covid-19 vaccines. The country has so far conducted over 157.74 million Covid-19 vaccine shots, with over 70.52 million people having received two doses.
