A stroke of good luck brought a poverty-stricken man 1 billion Vietnam Dong ($51,398).
Living in Thua Thien Hue Province, Nguyen Van Tien and his wife Nguyen Thi Hong managed to save VND15 million ($771) and decided to deposit it in Viettin Bank to earn interest. Their family was entered into a contest and ended up winning a Toyota Camry, valued at VND1 billion.

The couple decided to forgo the prize of a car, instead opting for cash. On July 18, a ceremony was held as Tien watched in joy while his wife accepted the gift, breaking into tears. Hong was speechless as she received the prize.
Tien has been paralysed since he was at 6 due to Agent Orange exposure. His wife sells vegetables at Thuy Phuong market, Huong Thuy Town, Thua Thien Hue Province.
Despite being paralysed, Tien has worked hard to earn money and the couple has 2 children. One works in Da Nang City and the other in the first year of studying at the Hue Academy for Music.
After the ceremony, Tien’s family was given VND 1 billion in their Viettin account.
Hong shared, “My family is so happy. We would not able to earn this much money over our entire lives. I never imagined that one day I could have VND1 billion. It’s like a dream to me. But today, luck has come to us.”
With their winnings, the couple decided to donate VND5 million ($257), pay their debts of VND40 million ($2,056), and use the rest for schooling fees, fixing their motorbike and renovating their home.
