Customs officers accused of demanding bribes
The suspension came after a video clip went viral showing how customs officers force passengers to give them bribes or else their luggage will be inspected. It was posted by the passengers who refused to bribe them VND5m (USD220) per package.
The passenger said the packages contain old clothes, home appliances and some auction items. Some of them are charity goods that will be given to people in Ha Giang Province this December 27. According to the passenger, when they refused to pay the bribe, their packages were forcefully opened.
"Here, only old clothes," the passenger said in the clip. "Forcing us into a room to ask for VND5m per package."
Hanoi Customs Department denied the bribery accusation, saying that the officers had to open the packages because they were too big. After making sure that there was no taxable items, the passengers were cleared. However, two officers didn't wear their uniforms correctly and one of them had a rude attitude when talking with passengers.
