41 dead, nine missing as floods hit central Vietnam

At least 41 people have died and nine remain missing as days of severe flooding forced tens of thousands to evacuate across central Vietnam, according to official reports.

In a report released on the evening of November 20, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment said historic flooding in Quang Tri, Hue, Danang, Gia Lai, Quang Ngai, Dak Lak, Khanh Hoa and Lam Dong had inundated or damaged more than 52,000 homes, forcing the evacuation of 18,840 households with 61,800 people.

More than 15,000 hectares of rice and crops were damaged, while over 30,700 livestock and poultry were killed or swept away. In Khanh Hoa, 88 hectares of aquaculture were destroyed.

A series of major roads, national highways and mountain passes were inundated or blocked by landslides, including Truong Son Dong Road, the Prenn, Mimosa, Khanh Le and Khanh Son passes, and national highways 1, 14, 14E, 14H, 40B and 20.

The railway sector suspended fourteen passenger train services on November 19 and November 20 as tracks through the region were flooded or hit by landslides.

Forecasts indicate continued rainfall of 70 to 150 millimetres, with isolated totals above 200 millimetres, across Danang, Dak Lak and northern Khanh Hoa through November 22.

On November 20, deputy prime minister Ho Quoc Dung inspected flood damage in Khanh Hoa and held a meeting with leaders of Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Khanh Hoa and Lam Dong to coordinate the response.

The Ministry of Defence has deployed nearly 18,100 personnel and 441 vehicles to support rescue and recovery efforts, and prepared four helicopters along with two tonnes of food and essential supplies for isolated communities.

The Minsitry of Public Security has also mobilised 41,800 officers and 3,200 vehicles to assist with flood response and recovery.
