Main streets including Cong Hoa, Truong Trinh, Au Co, Ly Thai To, Xo Viet Nghe Tinh have seen serious traffic jams, especially during rush hours.
The congestion is caused by the rising number of people travelling and shopping for Tet.
Many people are transporting bulky goods or flowers and bonsai trees.
Container trucks were seen queuing for kilometres on Hanoi Highway in Thu Duc City on January 27.
A truck driver, Tran Van Hao, said that it took him more than four hours to drive two kilometres from Thu Duc intersection to Hanoi Highway. "We have a lot of shipping orders at this time of year but the traffic jams have made me unable to complete my work," he said.
Traffic police were sent to Hanoi Highway to direct the traffic.
In the city centre, large volume traffic was also seen the same day on Hai Thuong Lan Ong Street in District 5 which has many shops selling decorative items for Tet Festival.
Collisions were common.
The congestion lasted throughout the day.
