HCM City Metro Line 2 construction set to start by year-end

Construction of HCM City’s Metro Line 2 (Ben Thanh-Tham Luong) is set to commence by the end of this year.

The HCM City Department of Transport has submitted a plan to the municipal People’s Committee to implement Resolution 188, introducing unique pilot mechanisms and policies for urban railway development.

Under the plan, the department is finalising procedures to commence construction of Metro Line 2 in December.

The project’s feasibility study report is expected to be submitted to concerned agencies in June for review and approval in August.

Ben Thanh-Tham Luong metro route to run through six districts in HCM City

In October, the Urban Railway Management Board will select the contractor for the project.

The 11-kilometre route runs through Tan Binh and Tan Phu districts and districts 1, 3, 10 and 12.

The project requires the acquisition of more than 251,000 square metres of land, affecting 585 households and organisations.

The metro line will feature nine underground stations along a 9.2-kilometre route, one elevated station, and a depot.

Metro Line 2 was initially slated for completion in 2026, but the deadline has been pushed back to 2030 due to various challenges. It is the second urban railway project in HCM City, following Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien), which was officially put into operation in December last year.
