Many hotels in the northern city of Halong have had to close to save costs due to the sharp fall in guests during the Tet Lunar New Year Holiday.

According to some hotels in Bay Chay Ward, they've reported a sharp fall in the number of guests since December 2023. And reservations for the coming Tet holiday are also very low.

Nguyen Thanh Thuy from the sales department at the Muong Thanh Luxury Hotel said that only 4-5 rooms out of their 700 rooms are currently occupied.

“We've faced this low occupancy rate since last December," Thuy said. "And we've only received reservations for 10 rooms so far for the Tet holiday."

Meanwhile, general director of the Cong Doan Halong Hotel, Ngo Dang Toai, said that they had closed since December 2023 due to low occupancy rate.

"Until now we've received no reservations for the Tet holiday," he said. "We'll reopen from February 15."

Nguyen Van Son from the Halong Hotel Association shared that many local hotels have announced that they've closed due to a sharp fall in guests.

“This is the first time that local hotels face such a situation during the Tet holiday," Son said. "Hotels here are now being isolated like the Covid-19 pandemic."

However, the representatives of Muong Thanh Luxury Hotel as well as other hotel brands shared that their hotels in other localities including Phu Quoc, Danang, Dalat or Sapa are still enjoying good business with occupancy rates of between 70-80 percent.

"The oversupply of hotel rooms are among the reasons for this situation in Halong," Thuy explained. "Halong has over 20,000 hotel rooms now but only receives between 3,000-5,000 guests daily during winter time. In addition, shortages of tourism products also add to the problem. After visiting the bay, tourists don't have much to explore here."
