Forecasts show that between January 1 and January 4, the airport will receive a total of 288 flights, a rise of 27 per cent compared with the same period last year. Of these, 147 are international flights, an increase of 23 per cent.

On January 1, Sun Group held a ceremony announcing its takeover of operations and management of Phu Quoc International Airport. At the event,  Deputy Minister of Construction Le Anh Tuan presented the airport business licence to Sun Group.

Speaking at the ceremony, Le Anh Tuan said the passenger terminal, which came into operation in 2012, was designed for a capacity of 2.65 million passengers a year. However, the airport handled more than 5.5 million passengers in 2022 and reached about 7 million in 2025.

Rising passenger numbers have gone hand in hand with higher expectations for service quality, particularly as Phu Quoc has become a special administrative zone and is set to host APEC 2027.

According to the deputy minister, these realities make a new operating model unavoidable, one that is more flexible, more efficient and closer to advanced international standards.

The first day of operations under the new model coincides with the New Year 2026 holiday. During the four-day break, total inbound flights are again forecast at 288, including 147 international services.

Also on New Year’s Day, Phu Quoc International Airport officially rolled out the ePass electronic toll collection system, aiming to ease localised congestion, shorten travel times and improve convenience for passengers from the point of access to the airport.
