A collision between two tourist boats carrying visitors in Lan Ha Bay, Haiphong, on June 14 left one woman dead after one of the vessels sank, local inland waterway authorities said.

According to the Haiphong Inland Waterway Port Authority, the accident involved boat HP 5665, carrying 31 Vietnamese passengers and three crew members, and boat HP 3847, carrying 10 passengers and one crew member.
At about 9 am, the two vessels were travelling parallel to each other near the Van Boi area of Lan Ha Bay when HP 5665 collided with HP 3847, causing the latter to sink.
Following the accident, nearby boats and HP 5665 joined rescue efforts, successfully bringing all 10 passengers and the crew member from the stricken vessel to safety.
A 43-year-old female tourist sustained injuries and was rushed to the Cat Hai Special Zone Medical Centre for emergency treatment. She was pronounced dead at 9.35 am.
Preliminary inspections found that HP 5665 held a valid technical safety and environmental protection certificate until October 15, 2027. The certification for HP 3847 remains valid until October 14.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the collision.
