Hue to build bridge linking Huong River islet

The central city of Hue will invest about VND 2.2 trillion (USD 84 million) to build a new bridge linking Hen Islet in the Huong River, with construction expected to take four years.

Hue People’s Committee Chairman Nguyen Khac Toan approved an investment plan for a new bridge to Hen Islet and its approach roads, replacing the ageing Phu Luu Bridge, the islet’s sole access route.

To ensure the project fits the river landscape, the city will hold an architectural design competition, following the approach used for the Nguyen Hoang Bridge, which features a distinctive arched design.

Under the approved plan, the 2.76-kilometre project will be 26 metres wide, linking the Truong Gia Mo-Le Duc Anh intersection in Vy Da Ward with the Nguyen Gia Thieu-Ho Quy Ly junction in Phu Xuan Ward, and will include pavements, greenery, lighting, drainage and traffic safety systems.

The project will be implemented in two phases over four years, starting with approach roads, land clearance, compensation and resettlement, followed by construction of the bridge.

Hen Islet, a 24-hectare alluvial island home to more than 1,200 households, is known for its scenic setting and local specialities such as hen rice and corn sweet soup. A long-stalled plan launched in 1998 to redevelop the area as a high-end tourism zone was scrapped in June 2022.
