Many markets in Hanoi have been abandoned.

Tay Mo Market in Nam Tu Liem District was built many years ago but has not been put into operation. As a result, it has seriously deteriorated. The market covers a site of 3,600 square metres and cost VND22.5 billion (USD929,752).

It has become a landfill and a place for dumping construction material.

According to resident Tran Thi Ly, the market is located quite far from residential areas, and near a cemetery which has discouraged traders from using it.

The area built for the market management board is full of rubbish, including discarded needles used by drug addicts.

Phu Do Market in Nam Tu Liem District is in the same situation as Tay Mo Market. Construction of the market was completed in 2017, but since then, the market has been left unused.

Many of the market’s facilities and equipment have deteriorated. Meanwhile, traders have instead established a temporary market.

Linh Nam Market Hoang Mai District is situated on a site of 3,000 square metres and has also been abandoned for over seven years. It was intended to replace local unlicensed markets. Local authorities said that the market management board will upgrade the market and put it into operation in the coming time.
