Le Thi Kim Lien, 34, has just returned home after undergoing surgery to remove her left breast. Despite weak health, the woman still tried to do some housework to help her husband.

"I noticed a tumour on my left breast last year when my husband developed tuberculosis, which needed urgent treatment," Lien said. "I had to ignore my problem, which I thought was just a harmless lump, and helped my husband treat his disease."

As her husband's condition improved after half a year of treatment, her tumour suddenly grew bigger. When she went to the hospital, the doctors said that she was already in the second stage of breast cancer and needed urgent surgery to remove her left breast.

"I've just undergone surgery, and now I've been told to continue the treatment with chemotherapy, which will cost around VND200 million (USD7,870)," the woman said with a sigh. "But we don't have any money left."

Sitting beside his wife in their poorly built 20-square-metre house near a river bank in Son Hoa District, Lien's husband, Nguyen Thanh Phong, 38, said he was very worried for Lien but was helpless.

"We got married eight years ago and have a daughter who is eight now," Phong shared. "Besides farming work, Lien and I used to do odd jobs to support our family and raise our child, and life was easy until I was struck down by tuberculosis last year, and now Lien developed cancer. I'm still weak and can't do much work when we don't have any savings left. And cancer treatment is costly. I hope that people can help save my wife."

Vice chairman of Cung Son Town People's Committee, Le Van Hoa, said that Lien's family was one of the most challenging cases in his area as both adults have health problems.

"We hope that Lien will receive financial support from kind donors to continue cancer treatment," he said.
