Safety nets to be installed on bridge linked to suicides

Authorities plan to install safety nets and decorative lighting on Ben Thuy 1 Bridge, a site associated with multiple suicide incidents, in a bid to improve safety and reduce risks.

Officials in Nghi Xuan Commune, Ha Tinh Province, confirmed on March 23 approval of an investment plan to build and install a decorative lighting system alongside safety steel nets on Ben Thuy 1 Bridge.

The project, funded by the Nghi Xuan Commune People’s Committee, carries a total budget of about VND 3.4 billion (about USD 136,000).

Under the approved plan, an artistic lighting system will be installed along both sides of the bridge’s railings, each stretching more than 433 metres. LED strip lights will be arranged both vertically and horizontally, using low voltage electricity of 12 to 24V to ensure safety.

In addition, steel safety nets will be installed across bridge spans to enhance protection and reduce the risk of objects falling below.

Ben Thuy 1 Bridge, spanning the Lam River, is a key transport structure on national highway 1A, linking Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces. The bridge is 630.5 metres long and has been in operation since 1990.

In recent years, the site has seen several people attempt suicide by jumping from the bridge, raising serious safety concerns. In response, authorities have proposed protective measures to help prevent further incidents.
