The mother Bui Thi Minh often acts like a child by laughing or shuffling her feet and waving her hands.

Minh’s older sister, Bui Thi Hong, said that Minh had got married and had a son. Unluckily, in 2012, her husband died of cancer and a year later, her son drowned. Following these pains, she suffered from depression and left home for two years.

When she returned, she became pregnant, but no one knew the child’s father. Then she gave birth to Ngoc.

Minh’s condition has worsened, but the family cannot afford her treatment.

At present, Ngoc and her mother mostly depend on the government’s monthly subsidy of VND900,000 (USD36) and the assistance from their relatives and neighbours.

Pham Thi Nam, chairman of the Nghia Hung Commune Red Cross, said that local residents have provided support, but this is modest.
