A bridge project starts in the northern mountainous province of Son La, connecting two remote villages in Ngoc Chien Commune, Muong Lat District on January 10.

The Cham Pong Bridge project, which is carried out by Dantri/Dtinews Newspaper with investment of over VND1 billion coming from donations of the Garment 10 Joint Stock Company and other readers, is built across a stream between Cham Pong and Nam Nghep villages.

At present, more than 1,000 local people are using a makeshift wooden bridge which poses dangers for local people, especially during flood seasons.

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony on January 10, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Dantri Newspaper, Nguyen Xuan Toan, said that he was happy to see the first bridge project of this year being built for people in a poor remote mountainous area.

"I've seen the difficulties and dangers local people have faced while using the old makeshift wooden bridge," Toan said. "I've also heard that they've lost opportunities to sell their farm produce due to transportation difficulties. I hope that the new bridge will help improve their lives."

Toan also sent his sincere thanks to the Garment 10 Joint Stock Company, other donors, and local authorities for joining with the newspaper to carry out the project.

"With support from many donors and readers, we've so far built 76 works including 28 bridges and 48 schools and dormitories in difficult areas nation-wide," Toan said. "Thanks so much for your help and support."

Speaking at the ceremony, Secretary of Muong La District Party Committee, Vu Duc Thuan, also expressed his thanks to Dantri Newspaper, Garment 10 Joint Stock Company and other donors for their valuable support for his area.

"This is a very meaningful project which will help improve the lives and local encomy for the villagers here," Thuan said. "We'll create favourable conditions regarding procedures for the project to be completed on time."

The project will cost an initial VND 1.30 billion (USD 53,126). After calling for donations for the project, Dantri has received VND 600 million from the Garment 10 Joint Stock Company and over VND 197 million from readers so far.
