Hanoi was announced as the world’s fourth most polluted city on Tuesday morning according to an AirVisual report.

Hanoi’s air pollution has mainly been blamed on vehicle emissions and construction activities.

AirVisual applications showed that Hanoi saw an air quality index (AQI) of up to 225 which is very harmful to people’s health this morning, November 28. With this result, Hanoi ranked as the world's fourth most polluted city, just behind Delhi of India with AQI of 282, Lahore and Karachi of Pakistan with an index of 265 and 235, respectively.

AirVisual's data was the same as the information collected by the VN Air application by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, which showed that Hanoi had very bad quality this morning with AQI of 214 in Long Bien District. Many other districts including Thanh Xuan, Cau Giay, Bac Tu Liem, Hoan Kiem, Hai Ba Trung, Dong Da, Gia Lam, and Dong Anh all had AQI of between 200-300.

The PAM air quality system also recorded dozens of air pollution hotspots in Hanoi, and many areas in the northern region. Some areas in Hanoi's Thanh Xuan District and Bac Ninh Province face serious pollution and local people are advised to stay indoors to avoid health problems.

Hanoi’s air pollution has mainly been blamed on vehicle emissions and construction activities. While in other localities, straw burning is also among the major causes of the pollution.

The most severe air pollution in the northern region of Vietnam often occurs from October to March.
