The one year pilot programme is intended to ease overcrowding at Hon Rom Island after coral bleaching has led to restrictions at some other popular sites.

The four new sites are located in the northern part of Hon Rua Island, an artificial reef area in Vinh Hoa Ward, the northeastern part of Tri Nguyen Island, and the waters between Bai Tranh and Bai Soi beaches, the Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee announced at a Wednesday meeting.

Speaking at the meeting, a representative from the Nha Trang Bay Management Board said that the coral reefs and ecosystems in these four areas were diverse and tourism activities would not affect waterway traffic.

"We believe that the programme could further boost tourism in Nha Trang Bay," he said.

The Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee said that they would carefully select businesses participating in providing the activities during the pilot programme.

"We'll evaluate the programme after the one-year period to devise the next plan," the committee said.

Spanning around 250 square kilometres, Nha Trang Bay is one of Vietnam's 16 marine conservation sites. The diverse coral and ecosystems here have attracted lots of divers.

The bay is home to seven diving sites, with six in Hon Mun Island and the other in Hon Rom Island. However, diving activities have been halted in Hon Mun since June 2022 in an attempt to revive its damaged coral reefs caused by bleaching; and Hon Rom has become overcrowded since.
