Oyster and clam hunting on central beaches
Many people in the central province of Ha Tinh can earn money by catching oysters and clams on local beaches when the tide falls.
Groups of women in Cam Xuyen District go to local beaches to hunt for clams. When the tide recedes, they dig sand at a depth of 5-10 centimetres to look for oysters and clams, using shovels.
Nguyen Thi Chau, 80, from Cam Linh Commune, said that every day, she earns around VND150,000 (USD6.38) from the work.
People have to wear gloves and boots to avoid being injured by oyster and clam shells or sharp objects.
Each woman can collect 20-30 kilos of clams a day.
According to Nguyen Thi Lan, 64, from Cam Linh Commune, each kilo of oysters is sold at VND70,000-90,000.
When the tide rises, they bring their achievement home.
