Vietnam billiards team edge Sweden to reach world team final

Vietnam’s national three-cushion carom team booked a place in the World Team Championship final after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Sweden on March 1.

In the semi-final, Vietnam’s top cueist Tran Quyet Chien faced Swedish legend Torbjorn Blomdahl, a multiple World Cup record holder.

Tran Quyet Chien made a flying start, racing to leads of 10-1 and 13-2. However, Blomdahl mounted a strong comeback, surging ahead 16-14 and then 18-15. The Vietnamese player steadied himself to close the first half 20-18 in front.

The second half saw both players trading points shot for shot before Tran Quyet Chien sealed a 40-36 win, giving Vietnam a 1-0 advantage.

In the other match, Nguyen Tran Thanh Tu narrowly lost 38-40 to David Pennor, allowing Sweden to level the tie at 1-1.
