The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has announced the 10 most outstanding events in 2014.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has announced the 10 most outstanding events in 2014, among them UNESCO World Heritage recognition, rising tourism revenue, Vietnam's strong ranking as a tourist destination and successes in sporting fields that garnered a world record.

The announcement, based on the recommendations of 133 journalists from 116 local press agencies,

The top 10 events were:

1. A resolution by the ninth meeting by the 11th Central Party Committee built on Vietnamese culture and people to promote the country’s sustainable development.

2. Recognition of the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex in Ninh Binh Province as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO Heritage Committee.

3. Recognition of Vi-Dam folk songs by UNESCO as part of the cultural heritage of humanity.

4. Strong support by the public for the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s policies encouraging the removal of stone statues of strange animals and replacing them with more "traditional" objects.

5. An event, “Vietnamese ethnic groups in the building and protection of Motherland”, at the Village of Vietnamese ethnic groups’s Culture and Tourism, with several activities directed toward the sea and islands, affirming the sacred and inviolable sovereignty of Vietnam over its territorial waters.

6. Excellent achievements at the second Asian Paragames at Incheon in South Korea in October, in which Vietnam emerged tenth out of 43 participating countries.

7. Organisation of the seventh national gymnastics and sports games, with participation by 65 cities, provinces and industries, where 57 national records and 158 games' records were broken.

8. World record for shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh in 10-metre gun shooting, with a score of 202.8 at the world gun shooting cup held in HCM City in March.

9. Tourism and services revenues at VND230tr (USD10.92m), up 15 percent on the previous year and the highest ever.

Vietnam ranks sixth in the world among tourists for safety and hospitality

10. Vietnam ranking sixth among the 20 best destinations around the world by the US-based Travel and Leisure Magazine in terms of safety and hospitality.
