The event was a VND2,000 (USD0.09) per plate lunch held at Nu Cuoi 1 Restaurant on Cong Huynh Street, District 1. This was the third time Hanh had visited the restaurant. Before leaving, she handed over the donation on behalf of her and her relatives.
The Nu Cuoi restaurant chain was a charity kitchen for the poor, founded by Nam Dong, editor-in-chief of Phap Luat HCM City Newspaper. The restaurant chain was established just one year ago. There are five restaurants in HCM City and they have just opened a sixth in Quang Ngai Province. According to Dong, each restaurant serves about 450-500 meals during lunchtime.
The cooks, waiters and waitress in the restaurants are all volunteers. As the university entrance exam has started, they had served 500 hundreds students. The cost of the meals are mostly covered by donations from many kind individuals and organisations. The restaurants only charge VND2,000 for every meal.
