A 15 year-old boy in Phu Tho Province is in desperate need of financial support to cover his heart surgery as his family cannot afford it.
Ha Thanh Phu's father, Ha Van Thuy, said, "Both of my children have mitral incompetence since birth. Our oldest son just had an operation. Phu had operation a year ago but his condition has worsened and we’ve been advised for him to have a second operation this year. We’ve run out of money."

Thuy and his wife are farmers. They have already borrowed hundreds of millions of VND for two operations and have run out of credit options. Without money, Thuy plans to bring his son home.
Sympathetic to their situation, employees at the social service office at Hanoi Heart Hospital are working with other units to raise fund for Thuy's son.
"We’ve been given charity meals. There are no charity meals on Tuesday and Thursday so we had to take care of ourselves. Luckily, the doctors gave us USD45 so my kid hasn't starved," Thuy said.

Nguyen Trung Kien, head of the hospital's Paediatric Department, said, "We have a small fund, just a few millions, to help patients from disadvantaged backgrounds. But the most important thing is we just don’t have the money available for the operation. He underwent operation one year ago but after being discharged, but the heart valve still doesn’t close properly and the condition has worsened. The treatment costs about USD2,700."
