A poor woman from the southern province of Dong Thap, who is struggling with the final stages of breast cancer, was abandoned by her husband.
Pham Thi Thuy, 37 years old, is now staying at HCM City’s Tan Binh District Hospital for treatment of the disease, which caused gangrene in one of her breasts.

Thuy's 65-year-old aunt, Pham Thi Muc, said some years ago, doctors detected a small tourmour on her breast and advised her to undergo surgery.
She did not tell anyone about her disease and continued running a tea stand in front of her house. However, the tourmour gradually got worse, forcing her to stop her business and stay in bed.
Her eldest son, who is in the 9th grade, abandoned his studies to sell lottery tickets to support the family. Then he moved on to work as a hired labourer.
Thuy said that her husband left her because he could not accept the bad smell from the gangrene every day. Luckily, Thuy got some help from her neigbouers and doctors at Tan Binh District Hosptial.
Thuy is now being taken care of by her aunt Pham Thi Muc
Doctor Nguyen Thi Ha said every day nurses clean Thuy’s wound and that the hospital will provide free surgery for her soon, but the family will have to pay the expenses of medicine and the hospital stay.
The financial burden will become heavier because Thuy will have to take a number of tests ascertain how much the cancer has metastasised.
Thuy’s mother died when she was small and her farther is now struggling financially.
