All kinds of waste and untreated sewage dumped daily into rivers of Da Nang are causing serious pollution problems and adversely affecting the environment.
Rong Lagoon (a small river that runs along Pham Ngoc Thach Road, Hai Chau District) has developed a disturbingly foul smell since the river is unable to circulate and the water is basically stagnant. A local from the area said the stinch is unbearable, especially in summer, and at night. The lights from his house often attract a huge number of flies and other insects from the river.
Urban rivers have been seriously polluted for a long time, but until now, it seems little has been done by authorities to thwart the situation. Sewage continues to pour in and rubbish continues to be thrown mindlessly into these rivers.
Ngo Thi Hoa of Hoa Khanh Nam Ward, living along Da Co River said while pointing, “You see! The river sides are completely covered with rubbish, with the river itself full of water-fern growing, causing the water to become stagnant during the monsoon season. Sometimes, they even overflow and get to our houses. Sooner or later, we will all become ill if this situation continues.”
The local people here often refer to these rivers as “death rivers” because they are so polluted that no organism can survive or thrive in it.
Below are some pictures captured of the “death rivers” in Da Nang City.

Pungent odors from this river constantly disturb the locals.

Waste water dumped into the river goes untreated.

All kinds of rubbish floating on the river’s surface.

Nowhere for the water to move.

Water-ferns don’t allow the water to move.
