Two children from a poor family in Thanh Hoa Province are living with their father and grandmother who both have cancer and their mother has died.

The ill-fated children
Family of seven-year-old Trinh Minh Anh and five-year-old Trinh Thi Minh Nguyet is living in a little house in Phong My 1 Hamlet in Yen Dinh District’s Yen Lam Commune.
“Even though my daughter-in-law has died, the surroundings still remind me of the days when she was alive, doing washing and cooking,” said Dinh Thi Luong, paternal grandmother of the two children said.
According to Luong, she has had throat cancer for years and her daughter-in-law attentively took care of her when she was ill. The ill-fated mother died last year after falling down from the top of high slack of straw, leaving her two children with the grandmother.
At the time, the husband, Trinh Minh Hung, was working overseas for five months. He felt something wrong and got to know about his wife’s accident after making a phone call to his home. He was compelled to stop his work to return home immediately to carry out funeral for his wife.
Hung became seriously ill after his wife’s funeral and could not work after he was diagnosed with a tumour in his neck.
Actually he was aware of his health condition since he completed paper work for working overseas but he tried to conceal it from his family in order to support his family.
"I feel just heart-broken when I hear about my son making careful recommendations to his children as if he’s making a farewell. I feel helpless because I have cancer myself. I’m really worried about the future of my grandchildren after I die,” the grandmother said.
To date, the little children have yet to get used to the life without their mother.
“I wish to become a good doctor so I could treat my grandmother and father,” the first child said.
Le Van Dan, a communal official said that after Hung’s wife died he has had serious health issues and often has to go to hospital. Now the children are supported by their maternal grandfather, whose wife is also ill and only whose only son cannot work because of a spinal injury.
