A five-year-old girl in Nghe An Province suffers an ostracizing disease, her body covered with black spots and hair that scares her classmates and worries her parents because she suffers seizures.

Ha Thi Mai is the second child in a Thai ethnic family in Bac Son Village. Mai parents said the black spots have a rough texture and were present when she was born. Doctors have no diagnosis.
"At first, they only appeared on her back, stomach and thighs. But now, they have spread to her face, hands and feet," said Mai's mother, Vi Thi Vang. "She says they are itchy, and she scratches until they bleed."
Nguyen Thi Nguyet, a teacher at Mon Son 1 Nursery School said, "There have been many times when she had seizures and would scratch anybody coming near her."
The school did not charge for Mai's classes. But because of her appearance and seizures, other children were scared of her. Mai's parents now keep her at home.

A group of volunteer doctors visited the village and said Mai should be at a major hospital. But the family cannot afford the travel or hospital care. They only have a small rice field.
Ngan Thi Ha, chairwoman of Mon Son Commune, said, "We've been giving Mai's family small allowances on special occasions. We are asking higher-ups to give her benefits for disabled people. However, she needs community help to be able to go to hospital and have proper treatment."
