A 28-year-old man of Khmer ethnic minority people in the southern province of Soc Trang has been in bed for seven years due to a deformity of the limbs, but his family cannot afford treatment.

To date, Lam Van Sang's condition remains undiagnosed. All they know is what they can observe. His entire body is covered in bumps and his fingers and toes are curled up.
Sang’s father, Lam Mach, said that nine years ago his son caught a copperhead and made some dishes out of it. Sang ate a few small pieces of snake meat before going to bed.
Ten days later, his body was covered in itchy spots. Because of their poverty, the family were only able get him herbal medicines for the treatment. The spots have gradually became swollen and lumpy, spreading across his entire body.
Two years after becoming ill, Sang was still able to walk, but gradually his limbs became smaller and curled up. Now he is completely bedridden, and he depends on family members for all his daily activities.
Sang’s mother said one time she cut his nails and but saw blood. Since then she has let them grow.
She added that, due to their poverty, the family could only take Sang to the local hospital for a check-up; they could not afford a higher level hospital. Doctors there failed to diagnose his disease.

Phung Duc Lan, deputy party secretary of Vinh Thanh B Village, Vinh Hai Commune, said Sang’s family is one of the poorest households in the commune.
Sang has a 17-year old younger brother who also suffers from a number of illnesses and weighs only 20 kilogrammes.
