A family in Nghe An Province is at a loss for what to do as three of their children suffer from cerebral palsy while the father was recently seriously injured in a work accident.
Bad luck strikes the desperate family
The couple, Dinh Trong Ngoc and Tran Thi Hong, live in a small house with their children in Da Dung 3 Hamlet in Yen Thanh District.
Ngoc used to support his family as a construction worker in Laos. However, nearly two months ago, he survived a nearly fatal workplace accident and now can no longer work.
“I and my two other colleagues fell about 17 metres during the construction of a bridge in Laos. I had the most serious injuries and was sent to General Hospital 115 in Nghe An for a spinal operations and treatment for my broken rib,” he recalled.
The father can no longer work
The couple has four children and only the first, Dinh Thi Thuy, 17, developed normally. Now she is working in a factory in the South. Meanwhile, three other children, including Dinh Trong Tien, 15, Dinh Thi Thanh, 10, and Dinh Thi Vinh, 2, have suffered from illnesses since birth. Doctors diagnosed them with cerebral palsy and myasthenia gravis. They are unable to support themselves and need daily care.
“My husband had to leave the hospital and come home even though he has yet to recover. We just don't have the money. I can’t stand seeing him fighting with the pain in bad weather,” the wife said.
Children with serious illnesses
The entire family has fallen on hard times and are living on the modest income from farming. They do not know how to pay off their VND65 million (USD3,060) medical debt.

Nguyen Van Ngoc, Vice Chairman of the communal People’s Committee, said, “Ngoc’s family is in a desperate situation. We’ve tried to provide them with some support but it's really not enough.”
