A man from a poor family in Binh Dinh Province is struggling to support his wife with severe health problems and his four mentally ill children.
Desperate family
Ngo Van Hien and Ho Thi Suong live with their four children in Vinh Hoa Hamlet of An Duc Commune.
Hien was an orphan when he was a little boy and was brought up by his grandmother. He married Suong, who was in a similar situation, in 1995.
Two years later, their first child Ngo Thi Hien was born, who was soon diagnosed with cerebral palsy.
The couple borrowed money to provide the baby with medical treatment at the Paediatrics Hospital in HCM City.
The second daughter suffers from the most serious mental illness
The next three children born to the family, Ngo Thi My Trinh, Ngo Thi Kim Thao and Ngo Thi Bich Hue, were all born with mental disabilities.
Their troubles got worse in 2008 when the wife, Suong, got ill. Now she can no longer work.
“I’m not afraid hard work but I can’t stand seeing my wife and my children ill,” the husband said.
Due to his wife’s illness, Hien was forced to stay at home and take care of the family. Now they live mainly on the modest income they get from farming. Sometimes, Hien works as a hired labourer to earn some money, but they rarely have enough food.
Four children could not take care of themselves
“I have great pain when I see my children eating animal feed. Now I don’t know where to get the money to pay off our debts,” he said.
Le Thi Hong Van, who is in charge of women's affairs in Vinh Hoa Hamet, said, “Local women often help take care of Suong’s children since she fell ill.”
Tran Van Minh, Chairman of the communal People’s Committee said, “Hien’s family is in desperate need of help just to get by.”
