Hoa Thi Cham, 71, from Thanh Hoa Province, has been struggling to support her daughter who suffers from metal illness and her fatherless grandchild.
Elderly mother taking care of ill daughter
Cham lives with her daughter and her grandchild in a makeshift home in Thai Hoa Hamlet, Hung Loc Commune.
They do not have any valuable assets except for an old, broken television, which was given to them by a relative.
“I have had a hard life with two husbands, but now I just want to take care of an ill daughter and her daughter,” Cham said.
She had her daughter, Tran Thi Duyen, now 46 with her first husband. The daughter has been ill since she was a child.
When Cham remarried Duyen was only two years old, and she pleaded with her new husband to accept Duyen into their family.
“I couldn't stand separating from my daughter. She was ill since she was born and she couldn’t walk on her own until she was three years old. Due to her mental illness, she can’t speak,” the mother said.
When Cham’s second husband died and her two other daughters got married with and moved far away, Cham had to take care of Duyen by herself.
Bad luck struck again in 2001 when Duyen became pregnant after running away from home. Cham was not aware that her daughter was pregnant until she was hospitalised.
“When my daughter gave birth my neighbours told me to send her baby to away, but I decided to take care of her myself. I hope that my grandchild will be able to support her mother when she grows up,” the old woman said.
In recent years, Cham is no longer is well and cannot work, forcing the ill daughter to wonder and beg for food.
Now they are living on a modest allowance for the ill daughter and the odd things she receives from kind people.
Little girl has uncertained future
Duyen’s daughter is now in the seventh grade at Hung Loc Secondary School. She has an uncertain future, and may have to cease her studies to work and support her ill mother when her grandmother passes.
“I wish to become a teacher when I grow up in order to have salary to support both my gradma and mother,” the little girl said.
