Duong Ngoc Anh is being treated at Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi
Duong Ngoc Anh, a first-year student at the National Economics University, resides in the suburban district of Phuc Tho, Hanoi. Nearly three months ago, she began experiencing prolonged fatigue and nausea. She often felt dizzy and collapsed unexpectedly. Her family borrowed money to seek treatment at several local clinics, but her condition rapidly deteriorated.
On April 14, Ngoc Anh was transferred to Bach Mai Hospital in a state of septic shock. She was diagnosed with multiple life-threatening conditions, including blood fungal infection, pneumonia, coagulopathy, and multi-organ failure.
For over a month, she has remained in critical condition in the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU), relying on ventilators and dialysis machines to sustain her life.
Nguyen Thi Tuyet Anh, Ngoc Anh’s mother, who is staying by her daughter’s bedside, shared, “Ngoc Anh fell ill on February 14. We took her to three hospitals near our home before being admitted to Bach Mai. So far, the total cost of her treatment has reached approximately VND 300 million (USD 12,000). We have no savings, so all of it has been borrowed.”

Wiping her tears with the edge of her shirt, she said, “We are farmers with only a small piece of land. I borrowed money to open a small curtain-making shop, and my husband works as a porter for a scrap collection warehouse. We have three children, with Ngoc Anh being the eldest. The younger two are 15 and 7 years old. Despite working tirelessly, our income barely covers daily expenses.”
The doctors have given the family hope, but also warned that Ngoc Anh’s recovery will require prolonged and intensive treatment.
“We even mortgaged our home. There’s nothing left to use as collateral. I truly don’t know where to turn now,” the mother said through sobs.
Dr Vuong Xuan Toan, from the ICU at Bach Mai Hospital, told Dantri: “Ngoc Anh was admitted on April 15 with severely low blood pressure, respiratory failure, and septic shock. She was diagnosed with septic shock, bloodstream fungal infection, bilateral thigh abscesses, multiple organ failure, dry gangrene in her toes, retroperitoneal hematoma, and coagulation disorder.”
After 35 days of intensive care, her condition remains extremely serious. She continues to rely on mechanical ventilation, continuous dialysis, negative pressure wound therapy, and a regimen of expensive antifungal and antibiotic medications.
Due to the severity of her illness, she must be treated with cutting-edge equipment and high-cost speciality drugs. The estimated cost of her treatment is approximately VND 400 million.
“After months of treatment, the family is financially devastated. We urgently appeal to Dantri readers and kind-hearted donors to help Ngoc Anh continue her fight for survival,” Dr Toan said.
