Nguyen Thi Thanh Xuan, 32, in Hoa Thang Commune, Phu Hoa District became an orphan when she was small. After that, she was taken care of by a poor relative and then got married to a local man. The couple had five children.

In August 2020, while the couple was picking up mangoes for sale, her husband suddenly got an electric shock and died. At that time, she was in her third month of pregnancy with their fifth child.
She was severely shaken, and depressed but she tried to overcome this state because of her children.
Dao Thi Tung Linh, Xuan’s neighbour, said that she wanted to give her fifth child to a family due to her financial difficulties. However, she later decided to keep the child. Many relatives and neighbours also solaced her.
Xuan sells jackfruits to earn living
Meanwhile, Xuan also has to take care of her ailing maternal grandparents who are over 80 years old.
Every day, Xuan has to leave home at 4 am to go to a fruit garden which is 30 kilometres from home to pick up jackfruits for sale. She earns around VND100,000 (USD4.31) per day.
She also sells other kinds of fruits such as mangoes and pineapples.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, she had to stay at home, worsening the family’s financial burden.
Xuan’s eldest daughter sells sugarcane juice to support the family.
Nguyen Minh Lai, vice chairman of Hoa Thang Commune, said that Xuan’s family is among the poorest in the locality. He hoped that donors could join hands to assist them.
