Waves over 5 metres batter Nha Trang ahead of Storm Koto

Waves in Nha Trang in Khanh Hoa Province rose above five metres late on Thursday, crashing over sea defences and sweeping onto a coastal road as Storm Koto approached.

According to the Khanh Hoa Hydro-Meteorological Centre’s 4 am bulletin today, November 28, offshore areas and parts of the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago were experiencing strong northeasterly winds, with gusts up to level 9 and rough seas of 4-6 metres.

The centre warned that all vessels and marine activities in Khanh Hoa waters, including around Truong Sa, face a high risk from strong winds and heavy seas.

Earlier, the Khanh Hoa People’s Committee issued an emergency order urging authorities to prepare for the storm, continue repairing recent flood damage, and use the brief lull in weather to fix damaged infrastructure and homes.

The province instructed the Border Guard Command to call all vessels at sea back to shore or into safe shelter and to guide residents in securing fish cages and boats.

People working on fish cages or boats must return to shore before 6 pm on November 28 and may only resume activities after the final storm notice. Local authorities have been told to deploy guards at flooded and fast-flowing areas and block all traffic to ensure public safety.

The storm is forecast to shift direction from west-southwest to northwest and north-northwest over the next 24-48 hours, moving slowly at 3-10 km/h and gradually weakening.

The typhoon is likely to affect Gia Lai around December 1-2.
