Addressing a January 29 session on A New Vision for Agriculture, Vietnam’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Cao Duc Phat, introduced the country’s experience in developing its tea, coffee, fruit and vegetables, seafood, and common goods baskets.

Minister Phat stated that all working groups of these five products are now applying advanced technologies as well as international food hygiene and safety standards. As Vietnam continues to promote its agriculture and restructure its economy, these groups have helped the agriculture sector improve product value, increase income for farmers and ensure environmentally sustainable development.

Minister Phat pointed out the country's major orientations for 2012, aiming to promote these five working groups as well as new rural credit groups and introduce more ways to protect the environment and support green growth. He also emphasized the need to research and apply green growth models for the whole sector, in addition to creating policies to put these initiatives into practice on a regional and national scale.

The Vietnamese minister called on entrepreneurs to invest, provide technical consultations and present opinions in order to formulate policies to help farmers become more involved in efficient production with support from State-run businesses.

Vietnam has been officially participating in the “A New Vision for Agriculture” initiative since 2010.

A New Vision for Agriculture is a World Economic Forum initiative aiming to increase global agricultural production by 20 percent, simultaneously reduce the poverty rate by 20 percent, and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent within ten years. Twenty six multinational groups are currently taking part in the initiative.
