Vietnam has announced it will build its first two nuclear power plants, costing 11 billion US dollars to meet booming demand.

The online VnExpress said construction of the first plant, with a capacity of 2,000 megawatts, will start in 2014 and is expected to be completed within six years. The plan was approved by the country's National Assembly. It said the assembly has not yet decided the timing for the start of construction of the second plant, which is to be located in the central province of Ninh Thuan, some 220 miles north of Ho Chi Minh City. Vietnam projects that the country's demand for power is expected to grow 16% a year until 2015.
