The Vietnam–Japan coal policy dialogue opened in Hanoi on March 12 with the aim of discussing policies to develop each country’s coal industry, power generation from coal and natural gas, and waste disposal projects.

At the event, the Vietnam National Coal–Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) said it wants to cooperate with Japanese partners to produce high-quality coal for thermoelectric plants.

Vinacomin representatives said the group, in its development strategy, encourages foreign partners, especially those from Japan, to invest in studying and applying advanced and environment-friendly technologies in Vietnam’s coal mining industry.

Representatives from the Japanese Ministry of Economics, Trade and Industry pledged to back the group in removing water from brown coal with modern technology to produce high-quality coal.

Vietnam will reduce its coal exports to 4-5 million tonnes a year since 2015 in order to meet domestic demands. Last year, the figure was 14.5 million tonnes.
