The Vietnamese Government expressed deep sympathy over the sinking of Cheonan, a warship of the Republic of Korea (RoK), said Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nguyen Phuong Nga.
The diplomat made the statement on May 20 in Hanoi in response to a question from reporters after the RoK announced investigation results of the accident.
The sinking is a regrettable event, said Ms Nga while underlining that the Vietnamese Government conveyed condolences to the RoK’s Government over the loss of lives.
Vietnam is concerned over and keeps a close watch on the situations in the Korean Peninsula, said Ms. Nga.
The Spokesperson reiterated that Vietnam persistently advocates peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula and stands for peaceful solutions to the disputes.
Vietnam hopes that all concerned parties exercise self-restraint for the sake of peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula and the region as a whole.
It was reported that 46 sailors were dead in the sinking of Cheonan on March 26.
