An additional 16,553 Covid-19 infections were confirmed in Vietnam on Saturday and Hanoi continued to record the highest number with nearly 2,800 cases, according to the Ministry of Health.
According to the ministry's report, 16,513 of the new patients are locally-transmitted cases confirmed in 62 out of 63 localities in the country with five localities seeing the highest numbers including Hanoi (2,791), Khanh Hoa (798), Hai Phong (748), Binh Dinh (742), and Binh Phuoc (718). There were 40 imported cases confirmed the same day.
The new infections showed an increase of 259 cases compared to yesterday's figure. There were 12,055 infections found in the community.
As of Saturday evening, 1,870,417 infections had been reported since the new outbreak occurred in the country in late April. Some localities that have recorded the highest number of patients include HCM City (507,338), Binh Duong (291,329), Dong Nai (98,650), Tay Ninh (81,722), and Hanoi (64,965). Vietnam has so far confirmed 30 Omicron-infected cases.
With these new infection cases, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to 1,876,394. The country now stands 28th among 224 countries and territories worldwide in the number of infections.
On January 8, an additional 8,990 more patients recovered from the disease, raising the number of recoveries in the country to 1,488,038.
On Saturday evening, a further 240 deaths related to Covid-19 were announced, bringing the total number of fatalities in Vietnam to 34,117. The high fatalities were reported in some localities including HCM City (18), Dong Nai (27), An Giang (20), Tien Giang (15), Vinh Long (15), Long An (14), Ca Mau (14), Hanoi (13), and Dong Thap (12).
Vietnam on January 7 administered 1.41 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines. The country has so far conducted over 159.15 million Covid-19 vaccine shots, with over 70.77 million people having received two doses.
