Vietnam chess stars leave for World Cup in Russia

Vietnamese stars Le Quang Liem and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son are set to leave for Russia on August 25 to take part in the World Chess Cup.

Vietnamese stars Le Quang Liem and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son are set to leave for Russia on August 25 to take part in the World Chess Cup to be held in Khanty Mansiysk from August 26 – September 21.

Seded 20th, international grandmaster Liem, world’s number 27 with an Elo ratings of 2,715, is to take on Indonesian Susanto Megaranto with Elo 2,544 in the first round. His compatriot and 73rd seed Truong Son will face Chinese Li Chao at Elo of 2,320.

The $1.6 million tournament has 128 chess players from 46 countries to participate.

Liem has attended two recent previous editions of the World Cup in 2009 and 2007 but got eliminated in the opening round.

Prize for the champion at this year’s event is $120,000. Just advancing to the second round is worth $6,000 in cash prize.

At the last month’s Sparkassen Chess Meeting in Germany, Liem finished second out of 6 world-class competitors.
