National carrier Vietnam Airlines said it has cut fares on short-haul routes of under 500km by up to 30 percent to promote development of remote, border and island areas.

The cuts, on instruction from the Civil Aviation Authority, took effect on January 1 and cover remote, border and islands areas and operated only by Vietnam Airlines, including Hanoi-Na San, HCM City-Can Tho/Ca Mau/Con Dao, Vung Tau/Can Tho-Con Dao and Danang - Pleiku/Quy Nhon/Dong Hoi.
The highest fare would now be VND1.6m, with highest fares for other short-haul routes at VND1.7m. The price does not include taxes and fees.
From January 15, Vietnam Airlines will offer discounts for passengers who have permanent residence at Con Dao Islands in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province; Ca Mau Province and Pleiku City in Dak Lak Province on the routes of HCM City-Con Dao; HCM City-Cau Mau and Danang and Pleiku. The airfare cut is from 15%-30%. The reduction also applies to military or others working in Con Dao, Ca Mau and Pleiku.
