Vietnam power sector urges electricity savings amid heatwave

Vietnam’s power sector has urged households to conserve electricity as prolonged heatwaves this summer drive up power consumption and household utility bills across the country.

The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said hot weather was expected to intensify nationwide from April to September, with heatwaves forecast to become more frequent and severe between July and September compared with 2025.

In Danang City, residents said rising temperatures since early May had forced many households to rely more heavily air conditioners and electric fans.

The Central Power Corporation said soaring electricity demand during the heatwave had placed significant pressure on the power supply system, with peak power consumption reaching 4,590 MW on May 15, the highest level recorded so far this year.

Nguyen Huu Khanh, deputy general director of the corporation, said increased use of air conditioners and cooling appliances was the main reason household electricity bills typically surged during summer.

Nguyen Viet Dung, a thermal engineering specialist at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said air conditioners could account for 40-70 per centf of household electricity use during extreme heat.

Experts said electricity consumption was also rising due to inefficient usage habits, including setting air conditioners too low and using multiple high-power appliances at the same time.

Authorities advised households to set air conditioners at 26-28 degrees Celsius, combine them with electric fans, switch off appliances when not in use and prioritise energy-efficient devices.

The power sector also advised households to keep rooms closed while using air conditioning, reduce sunlight exposure and monitor daily electricity consumption to cut costs and ease pressure on the national grid.
