Vietnam customs seize suspected smuggled iPhones and laptops

Vietnamese customs authorities have uncovered large quantities of undeclared iPhones, laptops and other electronic devices suspected of being illegally imported through northern border checkpoints.

According to the Vietnam Customs Department, officials recently detected multiple cases involving suspected smuggling, trade fraud and intellectual property violations in Lang Son, Mong Cai and Cao Bang.

In Lang Son, authorities inspected an imported shipment on May 13 and discovered seven categories of goods suspected of infringing intellectual property rights, including 30 men’s T-shirts bearing the Burberry trademark, 490 pairs of slippers labelled Crocs and Adidas, along with 180 handbags carrying the Coach brand.

Officials also inspected a transit shipment declared on May 10 and found 14 undeclared product categories in addition to the goods listed in customs documents.

Among the seized items were products suspected of trademark infringement, including 432 tubes of facial cleanser, 2,592 tubes of scar treatment cream, 936 boxes of hair treatment cream, 432 boxes of firming cream and 480 boxes of moisturiser labelled Sadoer. Authorities also found 4,200 boxes of sunscreen branded Formbo and 250 pairs of women’s high heels bearing the Dolce & Gabbana label.

At Mong Cai border gate, customs officers identified multiple discrepancies in another transit shipment. Six product categories listed in declarations were missing entirely, three categories had shortages and 23 undeclared categories were discovered.

Authorities also uncovered electronic devices suspected of being second-hand goods, including 54 laptops from brands such as Lenovo, Acer, HP, Asus, Apple and Dell, alongside 24 iPhones and 40 Apple tablets.

In addition, customs officers seized 504 phone charging cables labelled “Made in Vietnam”, 1,000 phone chargers printed with the Apple logo and the words “Designed Apple”, and 15 pairs of men’s sandals bearing the Louis Vuitton trademark.

Meanwhile, in Cao Bang, officials inspecting a transit shipment declared on May 11 discovered 22 MacBook Pro and MacBook laptops displaying the Apple logo and suspected of being previously used, as well as nine laptops branded Microsoft, together with several undeclared items.

Authorities said investigations into the cases were continuing in accordance with Vietnamese law.
