Police in Chau Thanh District who uncovered a gold smuggling ring have made two more arrests on February 18.
This brings the total number of arrests in the case to eight.
In the evening of February 4, police in Chau Thanh District, Tien Giang Province stopped a suspicious vehicle and discovered about 92 kilograms of gold. All four people arrested have confessed that they were hired by two people living in An Giang to carry the gold from An Giang to Ho Chi Minh City.
The investigation revealed that Nguyen Thi Tuyet Van and Nguyen Ngoc Luan are the owners and are living at Chau Doc Commune in An Giang. They wanted to sell the gold in District 5. The buyers made a purchase contract with Van and Luan but the police discovered it’s a fake contract.
They were arrested immediately. They are Tieu Khai Phen, 41, and Pham Tung Nguyen, 52, living at Ward 14, District 5, Ho Chi Minh City.
