According to reports from local authorities, the accident occurred on a road in Phieng Luong Commune at around 9.45 am when the two brothers aged four and seven dropped a bomb they collected somewhere in the area.

"The bomb exploded after falling onto the road, leaving the two boys unconscious with various injures," the report said. "They were rushed to a local hospital and then transferred to the National Children's Hospital in Hanoi for further treatment."

The National Children's Hospital announced on Thursday morning said that the two children had many injuries to various parts of their bodies caused by the explosion of a steel-pellet bomb.

"They were both seriously injured in their livers, stomachs, bowels and legs," the hospital said. "The younger brother has more serious injuries. We have conducted operations to extract bomb fragments from their bodies while still giving them intensive care and resuscitation treatment."
