The city of Hanoi will ban taxis from other cities and provinces from operating within its borders.
Taxis in Hanoi require new stamps
The deputy director of Hanoi Department of Transport proposed giving out 'special stamps' to taxis allowing them to operate in city beginning August 15. This stamp will be valid for a period of 24 months.
Transport companies will be responsible for the collection and return the outdated stamps, which must be returned to the Department of Transport within five days of the issuance of a new stamp.
A representative of Hanoi People's Committee said that this new policy is expected to improve the management and the quality of transport companies. The stamp will also help to differentiate taxis with licenses issued in Hanoi from those of other provinces.
Detailed regulations and methods to prevent taxis from other provinces from operating in Hanoi will be announced by the city people's committee.
Authorities in Hanoi have been trying to deal with thousands of unregulated taxis. Ha Quang Vinh, an inspector from the Hanoi Department of Transport, said Hanoi has 19,000 known taxis, of which, about 2,000 are not under the management of municipal authorities.
