Currently, the port mainly handles 15,000-30,000 DWT ships. So, Nghi Son Refinery & Petrochemical Limited Liability Company planned to dredge and upgrade the port.
Under the project, roughly 6.96 million cubic metres of mud would be dredged during the period. Some 1.9 million and 932,000 cubic metres of mud will be dredged in 2022 and 2023. Meanwhile, 1.6 million cubic metres will be for 2024, 2025 and 2026 each.
The mud will be dumped at a 400-hectare area which is some 8.6 kilometres from Hon Me marine reserves at the depth of 25-26 metres.
However, local authorities disagreed with the mud dumping, saying that it would badly affect the environment, particularly the ecological system of Hon Me Island.
Le Duc Giang, vice chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, has asked the company to consider dumping mud ashore.
